Masked

Maybe
as we age
our innocence isn’t lost
Maybe
we’ve just found
too many tricks
to not be suspicious
of the everyday smile
and the knowledge that each of us holds
a shrouded expression
Maybe
we don’t treat ourselves enough
to the childlike wonder
only found
in committing to the chaos
of forming
and forgetting
the otherworldly power
held
in eternally young spirits
Maybe
before we give up the ghost
we might find some reprieve
from the daily doldrums
and tedious truths of age
in that imagined magic
and delicate
illusory
character
Maybe
those too busy
too consumed by themselves
may enjoy the game
of things like Halloween
and the fun of transforming
behind a mask
a little more
if they weren’t already
wearing one
