I Saw Myself in a Dream

I saw myself in a dream
last night
Not my likeness
Not my name
But a man with character
all the same
I saw him standing
alongside friends
And watched him
as others have most assuredly
watched me
Such potential
What a mind
If only this man had the drive
I thought
What wonderful things he could do
What a life he could live
What a life
He stood uneasy
Feigning confidence
with nervous movement
and loud laughter
The calling card
of an anxious mind
So capable
but reluctant
So powerful
but afraid
It’s no wonder I saw my eyes
in his
This must be what it’s like
I thought
To watch me standing just the same
Shoulders stooped and smile lines
Fear inside a name
I saw myself
from the outside
As only others can
I saw my myself
and felt the words
I have to help this man
